A while back, one of my past watercolor workshop students saw one of my portrait paintings through Instagram and commented on it. We started chatting and I found out she had given birth to a premature baby, and he had been staying at the neonatal unit for over 100 days. So I decided to draw her a portrait of her and her newborn as a gift to commemorate this special time. Next thing I knew, word spread and I have done a few of these portraits featuring NICU babies and their parents since then. These are so near and dear to my heart, that it became a passion project and I would just ask for donations be made to the BC Women's Hospital in exchange for the portraits.

Without the hospital settings and all the machines in the background that usually show up in the photos, these portraits are able to highlight the special bond during the early days of the parent and newborn, and offer a moment of calmness during this special but often stressful time.

Giving Back:   I love doing these portraits and have decided to make them a permanent part of my creative practice. $100 of each sale will be donated to the BC Women's Hospital.

How It Works: This painting will be based on an existing photograph. You submit a photo (up to 3 people for NICU baby painting) and I make magic happen for you, capturing the spirit of the relationship between you and your baby perfectly. Each unique and timeless 8x10 portrait is lovingly painted using a combination of digital drawing, watercolor and pencil. The painting is printed on beautiful archival 140lb cold press watercolor paper that will last for generations. All portrait paintings will be painted in the same style as the samples that you see on this page. Please see below on how to pick the perfect photo.

Ordering Instructions: After purchasing, please send your photos to hello@lovebyphoebe.com, quoting your order number and full name used to purchase. Your order will not be in the painting queue until I have received your photos and have confirmed that I can work with those photos.

The best photo to use for this style of portrait paintings is one which is clear and well lit. Please either send me digital files of your photos, or take photos of the photos with your phone in daylight without shadows.

For best results with this painting style, I recommend choosing a photo where the subjects are about 1/2 body or 2/3rd body (not too far away or too close up), so that I can capture the facial expressions properly.

Posed photos are great, but daily snapshots also make really great paintings as well because that's when the true emotions and body language are most genuine and heart touching.

Please note that I do not make up or change outfits or hairstyles of the subjects you want me to paint, and do not normally combine several photos together into one portrait.

If you have trouble choosing the best photo, you can always email a few photos to choose from!

I took a watercolour floral class with Phoebe back in 2016 and have been following her on Instagram since. One day, I came upon a post that grabbed my attention. A beautiful portrait of her and her baby girl asleep. That picture struck me as it emanates the reality of motherhood - the sleepless nights, the selflessness, the love and sacrifices for your child.  I was at the NICU during that time and wanted to preserve moments I spent with my little preemie. I was overjoyed when I received the painting. It was so beautiful we ended up displaying this in our living room! Thank you Phoebe for sharing your talent and creating a sentimental piece artwork that our family could treasure forever.

We were in the NICU with our son for 175 days. One of the other moms in the NICU posted a portrait of her and her son done by Phoebe and I was immediately in love with the work Phoebe does. I arranged to have a portrait created of my husband and our son immediately. Phoebe compassionately offered to do the portrait in return for a donation to BC women’s NICU.  During such a difficult time, such a gesture reminded us that we were never alone on this journey. My husband struggles to look at photos from our sons stay in the hospital and yet this portrait of our son, and his father is a loved, beautiful piece in our nursery.
